Prosecution asks for 6 years prison for De la Rua in bribery trial

de la ruaThe prosecution has asked for a sentence of six years imprisonment for former president Fernando de la Rua, as the politician’s trial on bribery charges continues.

De la Rua, as well as his former intelligence service chief Fernando de Santibañez, have been indicted on suspicion of having paid off Peronist senators in 2000, in order to pass the Flexible Labour Law of that year.

The prosecution also requested six years for former senators Augusto Alasino, Remo Constanzo, Alberto Branda and Alberto Tell, considered «passive participants» in the crime, and a suspended sentence of 18 months for Mario Pontaquarto, who has confessed to his role in the scandal.

After a week of the trial, prosecutor Sabrina Namer believes the payment of bribes has been proven and described Pontaquarto’s testimony as of «great value as evidence», while declining to present a formal accusation against ex-Work Minister Alberto Flamarique, for lack of proof linking him with the crime.
