The sister of Pope Francis María Elena Bergoglio has been hospitalized at the Modelo Clinic located in the Buenos Aires province district of Morón where she is being treated since Saturday for a hypertension crisis, medical authorities confirmed today.
Addressing reporters at the clinic’s main entrance, the doctors said the 66-year old patient is “stable” and remains at the coronary care unit where she receives her medication, expecting the pontiff’s sister could be transferred to intermediate therapy later today.
“She smokes a lot and was going through lot of stress lately,” people close to the Bergoglio family were reported to say earlier when first news about María Elena’s admission were echoed by media.
María Elena has two sons and is the only direct relative of ex cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio who remains alive.
