A 0-0 tie in River’s Estadio Monumental was good enough for the home team to reach the next round of the Copa Sudamericana, eliminating Buenos Aires rivals San Lorenzo with a 1-0 aggregate victory.
The Millionaires’ triumph by that score in the first leg meant a draw would be sufficient to book a place in the last-16, and so it proved despite several scares on the evening.
The Cyclone, seeking to reduce the deficit left from the opening match, pushed hard and it took a man of the match performance from River goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero to stop the visitors scoring.
San Lorenzo finished the match with 10 players, when Pablo Alvarado was expelled just one minute before the end for a senseless headbutt on River player Carlos Carbonero.
The Nuñez club move on to face Ecuador’s Liga de Loja for a spot in the quarter-finals.
