Alejandro Marambio has been officially appointed to run the Federal Penitentiary Service following the jailbreak of 13 prisoners from the Ezeiza complex earlier this week and that resulted in the immediate resignation of now ex SPF chief Víctor Hortel. «Not ordinary» was how Marambio described the movie-like breakout.
Justice and Human Rights Minister Julio Alak was in charge of introducing Alejandro Marambio as the newly appointed head of the Federal Penitentiary Service (SPF in Spanish) after acknowledging the “commitment, professionalism and capacity” of Víctor Hortel who, Alak stated, carried out an “impeccable job” in promoting social reintegration policies.
Alak responded to the criticism over Marambio’s designation saying such positions belong to “conservative, right-wing sectors” that also oppose to the government’s social inclusion agenda within the penitentiary system.
The Minister also questioned media for allegedly «distorting» statements by human rights leaders who were reported to oppose to Marambio’s appointment.
In his turn, the new chief of the SPF referred to Tuesday’s jailbreak saying “what happened was no usual thing” and targeted what he described as the “lack of commitment” of penitentiary officers. “Without cooperation from inside, jailbreak would have been impossible,” Marambio told reporters.
