Uruguay celebrated their first gay marriage, in an intimate and “very moving” ceremony, as one of the grooms suffers from terminal cancer.
The “in extremis” ceremony took place in a Montevideo clinic and was conducted by Civil Registry officer Lucía Salaberry. The couple was allowed to marry after they presented a certificate indicating that one of them was close to dying.
“It was very emotional,” she said. “In this case, since the marriage equality law kicks in today and there’s a ten-day waiting period between asking for a license and performing the ceremony, we did it this way because one of the people in the couple is really sick,” she explained.
In fact, the ceremony took place on the first day since the law became effective in the country. Last April Uruguay was the second country in legalizing gay marriage.
