Kirchnerite senator Aníbal Fernández today explained the government’s decision to defer the review of César Milani’s appointment as the new head of the Army was made to “end with this cheap overacting.”
Milani’s appointment has prompted increasing criticism among opposition leaders and some government allies who assure he played a key role in Argentina’s last military dictatorship.
Yesterday, a meeting of the Senate’s Appointment Committee was put on hold after a report from CELS human rights group unveiled new evidence about Milani’s links to human rights abuses during the last dictatorship.
“The president accepted it could be postponed until after elections,” he added in statements to a local radio station.
He played down the CELS report saying “there is nothing new” in Milani’s references. “It wouldn’t be the first time we make a decision the CELS does not agree with,” Fernández stated.
