Píparo’s case ruling: Life sentences for five accused, two acquitted

Crime Courtroom N°2 of Buenos Aires province’s capital La Plata ruled today life sentences for five of the seven men accused of having robbed and shot Carolina Píparo in 2010 while nine-month pregnant. Two were acquitted.

After four hours of lecture, the judges Claudio Bernard, Liliana Torrisi, and Silvia Hoerr found guilty Carlos Moreno -who was also indicated as the material author- Miguel Silva, Luciano López, Juan Manuel Calvimonte, and Carlos Jordán Juárez, sentencing all of them to spend life in prison; while Carlos Burgos and Augusto Claramonte were acquitted.
Píparo’s case –robbed after withdrawing money from a bank- made all front covers due to the violence of the robbers who did not hesitate in shooting a pregnant woman.
The attacked woman gave birth to Isidro Buzzali a week after the robbery. With the shot Píparo took in her stomach entering through the baby’s cheek, impacting his breast bone and causing major lung problems, Isidro died a week after being born.
“I have faith in all of them getting life sentences”, Píparo had told reporters before entering court.
Likewise, she remarked that the trial was not a pleasant process for her as she had to hear “horrendous things like some people saying that Isidro never existed”
The trial was focused on whether the killing of the baby could be considered manslaughter, a hypothesis that was finally accepted considering the verdict’s lecture.
