The announcement made by Vice-President Nicolás Maduro about the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, 58-years-old, immediately hit the global press.
Spain’s El Mundo and El País gave the news with the same head: «Hugo Chávez dies.» The websites of both newspaper highlighted that the Venezuelan President had «defied the medical laws by heading personally the electoral campaign, and managed to forget, for a few moments, his worrying health. He even affirmed that he was ‘absolutely cured.’ He wasn’t able to survive the fourth surgery he underwent on December 11.»
Meanwhile, San Pablo’s Folha stated «Cancer gives an end to Chávez’s 14 years’ government.»
Britain’s The Guardian titled «Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez dies» and briefly details that his death «comes 21 months after news of pelvic tumour» and that «designated successor is vice-president Nicolás Maduro.»
The New York Times headed «Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez dies,» posting a photograph of the late president wearing his trademark red beret.
