Buenos Aires province Education Director Silvina Gvirtz tendered her resignation after provincial Governor Daniel Scioli decided to lead an intervention in the area including budget cuts aimed to reduce substitute teachers personnel.
In her resignation letter, Gvirtz indicated: “I’m absolutely Ok with the implementation o fan austerity plan made to detect possible areas in which resources could be optimized, but the cuts and adjustments proposed are out of the question. The Education General Direction cannot be pushed to cut personnel as it would be the case of substitute teachers”
Likewise, Gvirtz emphasized that “most of the substitute teachers do work”, as cuts are justified by saying that many of them are not working at all and only called in from time to time when needed.
Furthermore, the outgoing official said “They do a very well job. So, they do not deserve to be the adjustment variable.”
Gvirtz’s resignation comes after Scioli decided to designate Walter Carbone as new Education Administrative Secretary and giving him the main responsibility of optimizing all expenses.
