The subway will be out of service for five days, between two subway workers union strikes – the AGTSyP from Friday to Sunday and the UTA strike from Monday to Wednesday.
Subway workers from the breakaway AGTSyP union announced a two day strike in addition to the UTA subway and tram workers’ union’s 72-hour strike that begins on Monday. Therefore, subway will be out of service from Friday at 9pm affecting all lines, lasting a total of five days.
The measures are expected to go through if the workers’ wage demands are not met.
“On Friday at 9pm the subway will close and throughout Saturday and Sunday the service will be suspended. We hope that a response will be made over the course of the weekend,” AGTSyP leader Roberto Pianelli said today.
The AGTSyP union subway delegates made the announcement in a press conference at midday where they highlighted their wage demands: a basic salary hike of 28% and an increase of 1.3-2% of the payment as interest.
Earlier today, the UTA union ratified their strike, which was announced yesterday.
UTA head Roberto Fernández urged both the national and Buenos Aires city government to “find a solution” due to the fact that, “if the company cannot cope anymore, the consequences fall directly on the City.”
Fernández furthered, “A solution needs to be found, or on Monday we’re going on strike.”
