Olympic torchbearer and London Underground employee John Light carries the Olympic Flame onto an underground train at Wimbledon Station.
The Olympic torch toured today the London Underground as part of its visits to British cities, towns, and villages that started last week and will last until this Friday’s games opening ceremony.
The torch was taken to Wimbledon Station where, motorman John Light (64), was given the privilege of carrying it at the train’s cockpit as recognition for his 50 years of service to the London’s underground and being the longest serving underground worker on the District Line.
Later today, the torch will be touring London’s southwestern neighborhoods, where mythical British cyclist Eileen Gray, 92, will be part of the march and carry and honoured with carrying the torch.
In the coming days, the torch will be carried around London’s religious, political and royal landmarks, culminating in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron in east London.
«As it sprints through the city, I know that its radiance will dispel any last remaining clouds of dampness and anxiety … and it will spread the crackling bush fire of Olympic enthusiasm throughout the city,» London Mayor Boris Johnson told reporters, referring to the torch.
