Fernando Marconi, turned himself in to the La Plata authorities yesterday.
A man suspected of murdering brothers Marcelo and Leonardo Massa in the Buenos Aires province town of Cañuelas on Sunday was detained in La Plata on Wednesday afternoon, police sources confirmed.
The suspect was identified as Ignacio Daniel Chavero, and he was arrested by La Plat officials.
Earlier, Fernando Marconi, the only suspect currently held in connection to the double homicide which took place in Cañuelas, testified today and pleaded not guilty.
Yesterday, Marconi turned himself in to La Plata authorities.
One of the two men suspected of killing brothers Leonardo and Marcelo Massa in the Buenos Aires Province town of Cañuelas on Sunday remains at large, police sources said today.
Marconi’s attorney Rubén Carrizzano told the local press today that Marconi was not present at the Doña Rosa supermarket when the brothers were shot dead.
“We are going to prove that he never stepped foot on the premises,” Carrizzano said upon leaving the Cañuelas police station this morning.
Later, during a press conference in Quilmes, Buenos Aires Province Security Minister Ricardo Casal stated Marconi turned himself in thanks to “imminent investigation pressure.”
The double-murder of the Massa brothers, who owned the “Doña Rosa” supermarket, was committed on Sunday afternoon when two men broke into the store and one of them killed both of them in cold-blood and in front of the customers.
The two men escaped without stealing anything.
Based on the perpetrators’ behaviour, police authorities have determined that the attack could have been motivated by revenge, and connected to a robbery that took place at the supermarket in 2004 in which one of the Massa brothers was shot and for which the perpetrator was detained and condemned to 11 years in jail but was recently released before time.
The crime caused outrage amongst the local residents of the town, leading to protests at the local Town Hall on Monday before a protest march was held yesterday following a wake for the brothers.
Casal asked Cañuela’s population to remain patient and trust on the justices’ work to solve the crime. “We ask Cañuelas’ population prudence and patience. The justice system is consciously carrying out its work. We have to wait until this situation is sorted out,” he explained.
