The first part is, on my IMHO, the standard of how to competently mix the spectacle and the “smart” part. Being essentially a militant, the “matrix” affects how we have already guessed all of us, very interesting and deep questions, and these questions are quite logical, and the answers are not knocked out of the framework of the invented universe. Everything harmoniously fits into the outline of the world, and, most importantly, you believe in what is happening, because everything sounds very convincing.

Each time, reviewing the trilogy, I all the time discovered something new for myself! New plot, a new nuance that the filmmakers wanted to pay attention to. The film has thousands of little things. Almost every phrase and every fifth action.
In general, in the end, I finally “mired in the matrix”, replenished the army of fans and saturated with the idea of the film and his spirit.
At least 14 times I watched the whole trilogy whole.

And I would not say that it is an absolute work of art and the number one film among the entire trilogy, but then, at that time (1999) it really was Epic. Epic, in terms of novelty, ideas in cinema, epic, in terms of special effects. The actors’ game was at the level and corresponded to the spirit of the film almost completely. But no more.

Few people wanted to put on a film where people will be forced to think so much. Then there were militants with a bunch of explosions, and not a tragomotin with an impenetrable action.

And blame them for subsequent parts is not worth it. After all, these parts could not be at all (even the ending of the first part hints about it). And would you really prefer a story that has not ended all the love of all that has been loved by the whole that was created? Don’t think.
The second part has more action, explosions, a militant and chasing, but by no means less semantic load, practically. After one viewing, it may seem like this, but not after 14 🙂
And the branch and the rod that sprouted in the first part began to branch and “grow” from the plot, but they were part of it, important and integral if you really try to understand the film. Yes, sometimes the pressure from the templates and standards of that time is visible. But this pressure was given such an answer that the audience, and many directors who shot cinema at that time, gasped. It is no secret for anyone that a breakthrough in the cinema in terms of special effects and computer graphics began with the matrix (especially from the second part)?
And the storyline, although it grew, but did not get worse. Yes, more key figures appeared. The camera, as if moving away from the main triple showed the overall picture of what was happening.
