Representatives of various trade unions in the transport sector have failed to come to an agreement with the government over the granting of an end of year bonus and change in income taxes, and are set to consider industrial action and possible strikes after today’s meeting.
Juan Carlos Schmid, the general secretary of the Dredging and Beacon union, explained on leaving the Work Ministry that there had been no deal agreed with government representatives, including Work minister Carlos Tomada who received the union leaders. The official explained that «all transport unions will be called this Thursday to the Tramways Union» building to determine the course of action that will be taken.
Tomada met with syndicalists in order to address two major concerns of the sector’s workers: «a salary compensation against inflation called a bonus and the lifting of income taxes payable on the end-of-year bonus,» as Schmid told reporters.
The unionist added that «some form of protest is probably going to be decided which will affect the normal functioning of all train, air, port, maritime and urban transport services.»
