The Radical Civic Union (UCR) has formally closed the door on a national electoral agreement with either the PRO party of Mauricio Macri or Sergio Massa’s Renewal Front, in favour of promoting a list headed by a member of the historic party for the 2015 presidential polls.
«To assume the commitment of backing a formula headed by the UCR,» featured among the resolutions agreed upon by radical leaders today following a national summit in San Fernando, Buenos Aires province.
While the party supported «the building of [electoral front] the FAU», those present at the meeting simultaneously resolved to explore a «redefinition of its construction, its functionality and institutional rules with the goal of strengthening it.»
The meeting, attended by UCR heavyweights such as party chairman Ernesto Sanz and lawmaker Julio Cobos, was called after constant rumours of a Broad Front UNEN alliance with either Macri or Massa threatened to tear apart the non-peronist movement a year ahead of elections to replace the outgoing Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
While nationally the radicals decided to go it alone,l on a provincial level politicians were cleared to «make necessary alliances» with the PRO or Renewal Front as long as the party’s own candidates were supported in gubernatorial and mayoral races.
